Hey BFSA fans,
This is the first post from the new BFSA lot of 10/11. We are looking forward to a new and productive year. The committee this year looks a little like this!:
President – Tom Stanley
Vice President – Rory
Secretary – Chris
Treasurer – Tim
Events – Adam
Publicity – Caley
We had a good turn out for the AGM last night, and a new committee has been voted in:- President - Anthony 'Badger' Piggott Treasurer - Scott Jackson Secretary - Charlie Ellis Publicity Officer - Andrew Wieland Events Secretary - James Caldwell Social Secretary - Dave Passey Congratulations to the winning candidates, and we hope you have a very successful 2008/2009 There will be a hand-over committee meeting next Wednesday at 7:00pm in The Harp, but the outgoing comittee will continue to be responsible for Woodchoppers and Laura is going to carry on dealing with clothing orders for the time being. Also voted for were some new honorary members:- Roger Cooper Anthony 'Badger' Piggott Tom Heenan Sam Cook Debs Wieland Pete Wieland For those who are not clear what standing the honorary members have basically it is purly a 'honorary' title to recognise their contribution to the society, with no powers of voting and no right to 'member only' events. If they want to fully take part in Bifsa, they have to pay the full membership fee just like everyone else. This is a '2 way' arrangement as as well, and any future committee should feel free to contact honorary members for advice about any society matters. Also, in about 5 years time, Bifsa will have a ready supply of guest lecturers as we become experienced in our chosen careers. Thanks again for a good turnout, and thank you to all members for helping to make this another successful year for Bifsa.
Last night’s Student’s Union Society Awards saw another bumper yield for BIFSA.
The society won ‘Academic Society of the Year’, being cited for our series of guest lectures, field trips, practical experience, hosting international students, attending international conferences and attracting members from outside the department not studying forestry.
There were individual Gold Awards for our President Andy Pickup as well as our Treasurer Laura Crook, both members of the committee for the past two years.
There were also Silver Awards for Anthony ‘Badger’ Piggott, Rob Parkin, Sam Cook, Debs Wieland and Pete Wieland. Debs was particularly noted for always being there with bin bags and wipes!
The society were also runners-up for the ‘Event of the Year’ for Rocky Horror SIN Night (now officially recognised as ‘notorious’) and jointly with STAG for ‘Collaboration of the Year’
Also a note of congratulation to Bronwen Richards and Rosie Barratt of STAG who both won Gold Awards for their hard work for Treborth Botanic Gardens.
Congratulations to all the winners, and thanks to all society members for making this another great year, we couldn’t have done it without you.

The BIFSA Lecture Series“Floodplain Woodlands”Huw ThomasDo you remember the news reports of flooding all over the UK this summer? BIFSA have invited Huw Thomas, a forest hydrologist from the Environmental and Human Sciences Division of Forest Research, to give a presentation on this increasingly important aspect of environmental science. A graduate of Aberystwyth and Cranfield, he is currently conducting research into floodplain woodland restoration, and actively promotes its use as a sustainable method of flood aleviation and management. This lecture will be of particular interest to 2nd year SENR/SBS students as floodplain woodlands are covered in DXX-2305 Catchment Management.Afterwards there will be a chance for more informal debating over cheese and wine (non-alcholoc drinks also provided) 7.30pm, Tuesday 6th November Thoday G23 Tickets are £1 for members, £3.50 for non members and will be on sale in the Thoday foyer most lunchtimes (12.45 to 1.15pm) from Thursday 1st November. Alternatively, all members of the committee will be selling tickets throughout the week so track us down and buy one whenever you see us, you could even come and find us in The Harp at 8:00pm on Wednesday!
Following management changes at our old ‘home’ (The Waterloo), and their complete lack of decent beer, the committee have decided to move our weekly socials to The Harp. Also to avoid clashing with the Walking Club who have moved their socials to Tuesday, we have changed our day to Wednesday.
So, that is 8:00pm Wednesday in The Harp starting this Wednesday 3rd October. See you there!
